CHAPTER 17
Now what? Angela thought, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. It had been two nights now since Bea had left for San Francisco. Much as she thought Bea would hate the idea, she was considering contacting the police. But a trip back to the City, to visit Charlieâs office and retrace Beaâs steps, seemed like a better next move. She chided herself for not doing that in the first place. At least now she could chat through strategy with Pat â even though the detective wasnât experienced in finding people, the two of them might be able to come up with some leads together.
She stood up from Beaâs bed and rearranged the pillows to approximate Beaâs normal standard of disarray. She smiled a little, thinking how Bea wouldnât want to come back to too much tidiness.
Caffeine â Angela desperately needed some before she hit the road for San Francisco. She padded into the kitchen, in search of the two iced coffees sheâd brought yesterday and tucked in the fridge. She pulled one out and drew a long sip on the straw â a little watery, but not bad. She gave one of the egg sandwiches a zap in the microwave. As she was gathering up the hot breakfast, her drink, and her purse to hit the road, she was startled by a loud rattling at the back door.
âHallooooo!â called an exuberant voice â Beaâs!
âAngie, you here? Can I get a little help? I canât get the door open with all this stuff.â
Shocked, Angela dropped everything right on the floor and rushed to the back door. She let out a sob of joy and relief â then stopped and stared, mouth agape, at the barely recognizable woman she saw in the doorway.
âGirlie, arenât you going to grab some of these bags?â Bea said. She was struggling with the door and numerous shopping bags while Angela watched, seemingly mute. âAnd why are you looking at me like that?â
âIâm sorry, Bea. Itâs just ⦠I didnât know where you were. I was so worried. I missed your call yesterday, and I was afraid you were stranded. And now you look ⦠well ⦠a little different.â Angela struggled to take in the startingly new Bea in front of her. Beaâs appearance was transformed from head to toe. She was even wearing quite a bit of carefully applied, if garish, makeup.
âAinât it great?â Bea enthused. âI donât know why I gave up shopping. Itâs hella fun! Help me get all my stuff inside and Iâll give you a twirl!â
Angela hastily grabbed several of the shopping bags Bea was wrestling with. The bags were adorned with a graphic of a soaring bird of prey and the words âGift Shop & Mercantile.â Beaâs cane was poking out of the top of one of them. âWhatâs your cane doing in here?â
âOh, I donât think I need it anymore,â Bea said. âAfter my spa treatment, I feel like a new woman. Massages. Who knew they had such
